In fact, he spends the rest of the year in Skarpö as well. And Skarpö is a small island in the archipelago, if someone still doesn’t know. But summers are usually kind of boring. Mainly because the rest of the group is somewhere else. Uncle Benno and Oskar Bear, one of Joosep’s good friends, make money in America, for example. The owners of the house are busy with something in Germany. They’re probably going to the delicatessen shop, or choosing new ribbons.

Mopsik, another bear and a good friend of Joosep, uses them a lot, as girls usually do. Since Gustav, yet another one of Joosep’s bear friends, also has to look good next to her, he also has to get new neck ties all the time. When they return, there will, for sure, be a new tie for Joosep as well. And Rabbit, one of Joosep’s good friends the rabbit, will of course also get some, because they are here together and keep an eye on this life. And in fact, Joosep likes the new ties very well and Rabbit can’t really live without them at all. So everything seems to be in its place.

The day always started with Joosep heading to Vaxholm for cinnamon buns. Cinnamon buns should definitely be eaten with coffee in the morning, otherwise the day will not start at all. Joosep was already a familiar face at the Harbour Bakery and he also liked the baker’s wife a little. Of course, not like the Rabbit. Completely unthinkable! But I guess the baker’s wife liked him too, because neither of them could imagine the beginning of the day without seeing each other. Besides, the Harbour Baker’s cinnamon buns were the most delicious in the whole archipelago and it would have been a complete waste not to enjoy them every morning.

“Five cinnamon buns, please,” said Joosep. “Here you are. Shall we bill it to Joosep’s account?” asked the baker’s wife Maiu. Joosep had an account where all his expenses were transferred, and when the owners of the house came to the island again, it was all paid. “Yes. Thank you very much,” said Joosep, “Oh, they’re still warm!” “Yes, thank you very much,” said the baker’s wife Maiu. “Well, have a good day,” said Joosep and stepped into the pleasantly warm street.

Five pastries needed to be taken because two pastries would be eaten by Rabbit as soon as he got home. The Rabbit always had her coffee ready and the table was set with cups and plates on the veranda.

Sometimes, Bird Anton would also come to visit during breakfast. In the spring, he was usually very busy, so he’d rarely have time to stop by. Early in the morning, he needed to start singing with the sunrise, and then keep at it more or less throughout the day. Namely, it was necessary to make a good impression on Lady Antonina, because then there would be several large eggs in the nest. And that meant several Little Antoniuses, and that was the most important thing of all. But towards the summer, when everyone was more or less able to manage on their own, Bird Anton would accompany Joosep and Rabbit every morning. Sometimes Lady Antonina would fly in, but only for a moment.

So, two pastries would be eaten with the morning coffee. Two other pastries would be eaten in the afternoon, but this one, the fifth, Joosep had to eat right on the way, to be able to make it home.

By Midsummer’s Day, the grass had grown so tall that when Joosep went to get the cinnamon buns in the morning, he could no longer stand out from the grass. The fact that he was not seen was not a big problem, but the fact that he himself did not see anything in the tall grass except grass, flowers and perhaps a butterfly or a bee, was kind of a problem.

It often happened that Joosep went missing since the morning. It was noon already, and Rabbit could not stand it any longer. After all, cinnamon buns should be eaten first thing in the morning, not sometime in the afternoon or evening. Besides, it was possible that Joosep would disappear for days like this. There was no way the Rabbit could have allowed for this to happen.

She would then climb to the balcony with a good view of the surroundings, and when she found Joosep wandering around in the grass, she would shout orders:

“Now to the right!”
“Now to the left!”
“More to the left!”

Tracks had formed in the grass, but since Joosep always allowed himself to be diverted from his goal while chasing a bee and then almost always got lost, the paths were not very useful. From above, it all looked like a labyrinth, and towards midsummer, Joosep could no longer move outside at all without Rabbit’s guidance.

So, the summer passed quietly in the House.

Elsewhere on the island, there was a typical summer hubbub. There were holidaymakers and a flock of their children and grandchildren of the island’s inhabitants, who moved in noisy herds to the boathouse and then to the beach and then to the top of the cliff in the forest to watch the big ships and then to who knows where. There was a lot of noise around all the time. The ice cream truck went by once a week. Otherwise, Joosep might have bought ice cream in front of the House, but the danger of being trampled by children who were constantly hungry for ice cream was too real. Fortunately, this gang woke up relatively late, so Joosep was able to run his errands early in the morning.

BIRD ANTON AND THE REST Kondas Centre, Viljandi, 18 – 31.12. 2003 THE SUMMER OF JOOSEP THE BEAR For several years now, Joosep has spent his summers in Skarpö.
